In German-speaking countries children take a posy of this herb to church on St Mary's Ascension day.
 
Annual/biennial/Perennial Biennial
Appearance Large yellow flowers and rosette-like leaves on a very tall plant.
Height 4ft-8ft/1-2ms
Growing Position Sunny position, sheltered and at the back of a bed because of its height.
Disease  
Fertiliser Light organic.
Propagation & soil Sow seed in April but do not plant out until August. Flowers will not be produced in the first year. Sandy or marshy soil.
General Information At the end of the second year remove dead plants.
Spring Sow seed in April in a greenhouse or cold-frame.
Summer Thin the seedlings if necessary. Harvest flowers daily with caution. Leave some flowers to set seed.
Autumn .
Winter Plant dies down.
Use Flowers only.
Aromatic, Medicinal or Culinary Medicinal.
Areas of help Mucous dispersing, ani-inflammatory especially for the throat and mouth.
Storage Use freshly picked or dried.
Specific Use
  • The flowers must be handled carefully, picked in the morning and used straight away otherwise they become useless..

Tea:
One teaspoon of flowers to one cup of water but make sure it is well strained through muslin.
