CATAGORY TYPE TIP
AQUATICS . .
BIRDS . Even the smallest garden has space for a bird bath and birds help to control pests in the garden. I improvised by putting a 24in glazed planter saucer on top of a wrought iron plant holder, the two only cost £7 from a local car boot sale and the birds love it.
CONTAINER . Water every evening in the height of the summer.
HOT HOUSE . .
CACTI . .
EVERGREENS . .
FERTILISERS . .
FLOWERS Bulbs   Never cut the leaves off after the flowers have died down as these are used by the bulbs to manufacture food for the following year.
. General Cut dead flower heads off to encourage more to come.
FRUITS . .
GARDEN DESIGN . .
GREENHOUSES . .
HANGING BASKETS . Water retaining gel mixed with your compost will help keep your plants moist on very hot days.
HERBS . The herb pages on this site are very informative but tips are always useful .
HOT HOUSE . .
HOUSEPLANTS . If you can add your experiences to our already huge section on houseplants it will help other enthusiasts
LAWNS . Always water grass in the evening as this allows the lawn to reep the full benefit of the water through the night. Watering in the morning or during the day will cause the water to evaporate especially with hot sun, causing wastage of a precious commodity. Water on leaves of any type in hot sun will cause them to scorch as the water droplets act as a magnifying glass.
ORCHIDS . Cymbidium are a cool growing orchid and are much easier to grow than most. If you are new to growing orchids this is the one for you as the blooms last for up to 3 months and they will stand a minimum night time temperature of 10-12 Centigrade and daytime of 16 Centigrade. They can be left outside during the summer and can even benefit from early light frosts as this encourages them to produce blooms, the situation must be monitored though as you dont want your plant to die. Keep away from dark damp places as slugs will enjoy eating the roots.
ORGANICS . A huge and ever increasingly popular way of gardening life. At last people are turning against chemicals especially in the production of our food.
PESTS . .
PONDS   In October put a rubber ball into your pond to prevent any cracks in the surrounding concrete.
SEASIDE . .
SEEDS   Collect all your seeds together in one place, arrange them into groups by month of planting. When the time comes you will be ready to sow out.
SHRUBS . .
TREES . .
TROPICAL . .
VEGETABLES . Give your vegetables a very good soak of water at least once a week in the evening, this will encourage long deep roots where the ground is moist even in drought. If you only water lightly the water will evaporate.
