| Not
really a herb or is it? 'Strawberry Rash' means the strawberries are good for you as the rash is caused by acids leaving the body that otherwise might remain. |
|
| Annual/biennial/Perennial | Perennial. |
| Appearance | Fan-shaped, dark green, glossy leaves with white flowers. |
| Height | 6ins/15cms |
| Growing Position | Full sun. |
| Fertiliser | Prepare the bed with well rotted manure. |
| Propagation and soil | My example: I bought one plant two years ago, this produced runners with little plants on the end. Choose the strongest looking plants and put in to a pot still attached to the mother plant or if you have lots of space push each plant gently into the ground. In the Autumn cut the runner and either repot or pot out where they are to remain in a manure rich soil that is well drained. If your soil is heavy grow on ridges that have light loam mixed in with your soil. Three years on I now have 20 plants it could have been more but I am restricted for space. Some strawberry varieties are propagated by division. |
| Spring | Cut off dead leaves and weed the area, straw will help keep the slugs away, place around the plants.. |
| Summer | Keep birds off the plants with netting. Water well. Start attending to those runners in early summer. |
| Autumn | Pot out your new plants or repostion the new runners giving enough space for all. |
| Winter | Cut dead leaves off . |
| Use | Fruits, leaves and roots. |
