Introduction.

From as far back as I can remember our family has always had a very natural lifestyle, we generally wear natural fabrics, all our food was freshly cooked with vegetables that my father grew on his allotment, fruits were grown in the garden alongside flowers and trips to the doctor were only made to make sure that the ailment was not life threatening. I only learnt recently that my father had wanted to become a farmer before he got married but a different lifestyle was to overtake his path and he travelled to London every weekday for 25 years. Since his retirement some 20 years ago my parents love of nature and a healthy lifestyle took them in many different directions working as a volunteers for the RSPB and The Sussex Wildlife Trust.
When parents teach their children the value of the precious world that surrounds them all is not lost for future generations. We must spread the word and be invloved even in the smallest way supporting when we can all the methods of organic growing.

At present this page will only touch the surface of a huge subject, so if you would like much more information on this way of life then there really is only one site that can help you and that is http://www.soilassociation.org it has heaps of pages on all sorts of related subjects.

Here are some of the more common questions answered in brief.

What exactly is 'organic' ?

The production of crops on a rotational basis without the use of artificial chemical fertilisers and pesticides and the rearing of animals without the use of antibiotics, growth hormones, wormers and who knows what other drugs.

Why are 'organic' growing methods better ?

The continual and unsustainable use of artificial chemical fertilisers and pesticides over the last 40 years has devastated all living creatures from humans down to the tiniest of micro-organisms. Our rivers are amongst the dirtiest in Europe, contaminated with pollutants some of which come from the soil on which our vegetables and crops are grown. The increase in the numbers of cancers is alarming. Wildlife has been decimated and recovery is slow but growing awarness can change our world for the better.
Only when the biological balance is maintained can everything living within the soil and above it have a long and healthy life.

Why does organic produce cost more?
It takes two years before a farmer can be accredited Organic by the Soil Association after converting from a conventional farm to an organic one and these farmers do not receive the same level of EU subsidies.
Organic Produce and why you should buy it.
It is healthy, natural and environmentally friendly. We must support the organic growers in our country and around the world by buying their produce and we really must think more about sustainable growing methods so that future generations can inherit a rich and uncontaminated earth.
