HERB SOWING INFO USES
CAMPHOR,
Balsamita vulgaris
Indoors Feb-April Put in a sunny position in a pot. Dies right down in winter so cut back old woody stems to encourage next years growth. Dry the leaves and flowers. The leaves can be used to prevent moths and the flowers can be used in floral displays.
CARAWAY,
Carum carvi
Outdoors Autumn or May Sow in a sunny position where plant will stay. Cover the seed heads with a fine cloth. Dry the seeds in winter. Most popular in soup, cakes, bread, and apple-pie.The seeds can be used for indigestion if made into a tea or chew a few seeds before your meal to aid digestion.
CELERY,
Apium graveolens
Outdoors March-April Celery likes damp rich soil. Maybe not really thought of as a herb but its beneficial properties abound especially with rheumatism, arthritis, neuralgia and liver ailments. It also helps to restore appetite.
CHAMOMILE,
Anthemis nobilis
Outdoors March-September Most commonly used to make a lawn in an area where there is little water. It is fragrant when you tread on it. The seeds prefer a sunny position so they get a good start. Chamomile has many uses, briefly, flower and leaves for tea for a general tonic, as hair lotion to brighten your hair and as an eye lotion to soothe and heal.
CHERVIL,
Anthriscus sylvestris
Outdoors Spring-Summer Plant the seeds in your chosen spot every two weeks and leave some plants to set seed for next years plants. They prefer partial shade. Remove dead plants. Very good in salads and as a tonic if made into tea. Helps the memory and depression. If you make your own bread add some leaves to the dough for extra flavour.
CHIVES,
Allium schoenoprasum
Indoors March-May Plant in pots for easy use in the kitchen and cut to encourage growth. Can be put outside in May. In salads and with new potatoes. Good as a general cleanser and blood tonic.
CHIVES,GARLIC
Allium tuberosum
Outdoors April-June . Indoors February- April Plant in pots for easy use or in the garden. Snip and use to promote growth. Garlic Chives have a mild onion flavour and make a change in salads and stir-fry.Cut as required to encourage growth.
COMFREY,
Symphytum officinale
Outdoors From March It prefers damp conditions in partial shade. Another wonder herb with a country name of Knit-bone which rather tells its own story as it can aid the recovery of bones, ligaments and muscles. The root was used for the remedy of TB and other lung disorders. Makes a good insect repellant if you rub the leaves on your skin.
CORIANDER,
Coriandrum sativum
Outdoors April Sow the seeds where the plant is to remain, it does well in partial shade. Cover seed heads with muslin to prevent them scattering. The seeds are dried and ground in curries and the leaves sometimes called Chinese Parsley because of the likeness. Strengthening for the heart and to aid stomach ailments.
CUMIN,
Cuminum cyminum
Indoors March Harden off in late April when the plants are about 10ins high. Place in a sunny sheltered position. Not really an English herb but none the less very popular for curries, pickles and chutneys.
