Appearance Large broken form leaves with a heavy scent, with flat wheel-heads of creamy coloured flowers.

Growing Position Anywhere, at the back of a bed because of the height or in a corner with plenty of room.
Fertiliser  
Propagation & soil Rich, well drained soil.
Spring Buy or try to grow from seed.
Summer  
Autumn Cut back.
Winter  
Use All parts, except the stems which contain cyanide.

Areas of help Lymphatic, colds, coughs, anaemia, laxative, burns, rashes and eczema.

Specific Use
  • The stems contain cyanide
  • The root washed, soaked, finely shaved and simmered for several minutes for kidney and lymphatic ailments.
  • A tablespoon of the powdered inner bark from the old branches steeped in a glass of wine for epileptic fits. At the onset of a fit give a wineglass.
  • Plain elder leaves tea is a cure for eczema.
  • Pound up the berries with honey for sore throats, anaemia, as a gentle laxative
  • Rub the honey and berries on malignant skin growths, internally and externally.
