April is a very good time to buy a new variety of clematis for that area of bare trellis, wall, dead tree, ground cover or any area which needs a majestic plant and with over 700 varieties to choose from, the decision can be daunting.
It is very easy to take cuttings in the spring and summer to increase your stock, if you have a propagator you are almost assured of a success as cuttings like warmth from underneath. If a friend has a beautiful clematis plant ask for a few cuttings and if they root well you can always give them one back as a surprise gift.
Pune in the autumn or spring to clean out dead branches When you buy a new plant do check the soil for snail eggs or grubs and make sure that they are not infested with greenfly. If you are repotting or planting out make sure it is planted deeply up the stem as this will stop clematis wilt. Check in spring for snails as they can devastate your new shoots and flowers.
